estrin1 Posted July 4, 2008 Report Share Posted July 4, 2008 I had a friend send me a large zip file. He runs a Mac OS and I run Windows XP. I'm unable to decompress the zip file because (from what I can gather on my own) almost all the files in the zip file have a "/" character in the file name. This is apparently legal on Mac but an illegal naming scheme on XP. Does anyone know how to rename the files within a .zip file without decompressing it or does someone know how to remedy this problem without me having to redownload a rather large zip file? I think WinZip or another non-Windows tool may be able to extract the files, but I am not 100% sure. estrin1 Posted July 4, 2008 Author Report Share Posted July 4, 2008 i tried out the evaluation version and when i went to decompress it kept telling me file could not be created because of invalid name or some such, basically told me nothing i didn't already suspect. I've posed this question on another tech forum and someone there mentioned something about using the command prompt to rename the files in the zip file itself. So I don't know how to rename files inside a compressed file with a command. But since Windows XP can see files inside a compressed file, it should be possible.P.S. or did the other suggestion mean the WinZip command line interface?P.P.S. (But that may not work because of the slashes.)P.S. just tried that, but Explorer doesn't offer a rename function either (inside a ZIP file).
