Strange XP problem

Recommended Posts

Hi to all members,

a few weeks ago a strange problem occured. First of all i have a desktop pc with OS WinXP Pro which is almost new (October 2007). Suddenly when i was surfing on the net Firefox stopped, when I was trying to open a new page nothing happened (the application seems to be working, I can open a new tab but there is no traffic at all, like that I am disconnected). First I thought it was Firefox's problem but the same thing with IE and Opera (I am on a Lan). The next thing I did was to reboot, everything was fixed, I could surf again, but for a while (maybe an hour or so). After that I installed another pci network card (the other one is onboard) and another cable but nothing changed. I have to mention that every time I reboot everything comes to normal but when I press restart I have to wait for a couple of minutes, sometimes more, and some messages appear (i.e. Firefox is not responding press ok to end the application or the same for OE, of course both applications were shut down by me earlier in order to reboot). Any other application which doesn't need Internet access seems to work fine. Another strange thing is that I have Linux (Ubuntu 8.04) installed in the same pc, in the same HD and everything is working JUST FINE, even Firefox!!! I scanned everything with different antivirus, antispyware but nothing important came up. Sometimes the problem occurs after 5-10 minutes and sometimes, like yesterday, after several hours. I don't know what to do anymore. Any help or suggestion it would be more than useful.

Thanks in advance,

Alex

Welcome to the Windows Forum, Member No.: 12,000! :flowers:

Do you have a firewall that could be blocking traffic?

Can you run another malware scan on http://housecall.trendmicro.com/; try the link that says v6.6 - it works better than the older version.

Pat thanks for the reply (the only one), the firewall was the problem!!! I had Commodo all the time (never changed). I shutted it down a few times but as it seems the traffic was already blocked and i thought that firewall was working ok. I unistalled commodo, even antivirus, and now I have all in one and everything is back to normal. Thanks again and keep on posting!!!

What AV and firewall have you now installed? :D

AVG Internet Security which is a complete suite (AV, Firewall, AntiSpyware, AntiSpam, AntiRootkit, E-mail Scanner etc). Firewall needs a bit of attention and training, very often messages of outgoing traffic pop up. I hope it would be less and less every day. Finally I believe that it is a "heavy" application, because of all these tools, but I'll have to wait and see if it is that or something else that makes sometimes my system run slow and unstable.
