MOJ Posted July 23, 2008 Report Share Posted July 23, 2008 Hi,I wanted to ask about a problem which I have been facing for quite a while on a VPS on which I have hosted a few websites. I have communicated with the hosting service providers and they have said that they cant do anything about it as it is a VPS and I have to take care of it. The issue is that after a week or two alot of tmp files are generated in the system32 folder. They are of the format, "SET****.tmp" such as SET1FB2.tmp etc. I have opened these files in the notepad and found that they consist of some information related to an error that took place while trying to run some application. Kindly do help me out in this issue as I have searched the internet and looked at alot of soft wares and none of those have solved the problem. As these files will get generated by some application which intend to use temporary location for its operation. If you could find that application, you can either set it to delete those files, or can change the location of temporary files.And also for hosting purpose, which Web Server are you using?If you let me know the details about your VPS, We can proceed with the solution. The applications that I have running on my VPS are as follows:Plesk control panel to manage the VPS(Pre Installed)Virtuozzo Power Panel(Pre Installed)MySQL 5SQLyogSQL Server 2000(Pre Installed)PHP 4.4.3 and 5.2 (Pre Installed).net Framework 1.1 and 2.0(Pre Installed)This pretty much sums up the applications installed on the server. If there would be anything else then I will post that also after confirming. The server that I am using is:Quad 2.4 Ghz Dual Core AMD Opteron 10 Gig HDD350 mb ram (trying to stay cheap most probably upgrade a bit later.)The server is hosted by 1and1 hosting company. Tanmaya Posted July 23, 2008 Report Share Posted July 23, 2008 Hi,As system32 folder is only accessible by Windows application/privileged accounts, they only can write under it. So I suspect that, those files are getting creating because of Windows Automatic Updates, or Windows System Reconfigurations. So don't worry, Its your OS, who is responsible for creating such files. No one else can enter system32 folder, to modify its content. So now you will need to just check, whether Windows System User does have Modify permission, to delete these .tmp files. Anyway thanks for your help and I will try to stop windows updates from causing these problems most probably by making it ask before making updates.
