Unable to associate file types with a program

On my recently rebuilt work XP laptop I am trying to associate *.php files with HAPEDIT - a freebie php , html etc editor (very good by the way).

It allows me to go through the motions and choose hapedit.exe but it doesn't actually do it.

This worked OK before the rebuild and works OK on my own XP laptop and a Vista desktop PC.

Can anyone think what might be happening

Is it actually associated with anything? Have you tried to reinstall Hapedit?

1. Maybe you already have done that( I didn't understand exactly from your description :)) but...have you tried: On a *.php file --> Right Click-->Open With...--> Choose hapedit and tick the Checkbox saying "Always open with this program"...Its the simplest of all.

2. Check if you have some other (possibly php or some other lang related program/editor) which protects its file associations from being 'taken' by other apps.

3. Reinstall is always worth a try( as previously stated)

Yes I tried re-installing HAPEDIT and tried again as you suggested in 1. I can associate with notepad or explorer but not HAPEDIT - it is very strange as I do this all of the time and as I say I did this with the previous build as well as on my own PCs'.

Don't know if I'm being patonising or not - not sure how much you've done having read the thread, but try going to folder options in your contol panel and go to the file types tab. Scroll to the extension you want and see if it's allocated correctly. If not, try changing it. Do you use another program for editing other things that might be so selfish as to apply itself as the default program for various files?

I tried this route also - it goes through the motions of letting me choose Hapedit.exe but then does not do it. I can choose notepad , word , explorer etc.

I am wondering if this build is set to not allow me to associate other than a standard list of files.

You can add file associations through the registry too. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT contains all registry files

Make a backup first of course.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT is a direct shortcut to the file extensions.
