lynsky Posted September 17, 2008 Report Share Posted September 17, 2008 i want to reformat my hardrive and reinstall everything but when its running installation it goes for a bit and then goes to error message and has this "CHKDSK /F" so im gunna run that here soon, but is there a problem with my hardrive that it might not be able to reinstall everything? catgate Posted September 17, 2008 Report Share Posted September 17, 2008 Your question does not say what OS you are using, but "CHKDSK" messages usually mean you should run the checkdisk programme to ensure your hard drive is in order. It is probable that your installation has found a damaged area]. If you run chkdsk with the /F option it should "fix" the errors for you. lynsky Posted September 17, 2008 Author Report Share Posted September 17, 2008 i ran the /f and its still giving the error message, I tried booting the installation from the desktop but it says it cant run installtion in safe mode, i cant even run the computer outside of safemode. Could it be that the HD has decided it has had enough? Have you run fdisk to see how things are partitioned or do you know this already?More information would help. I have no idea what you mean by "OS" it currently has wndows xp home on it, but we tried putting proffesional on it. When we start the computer it gives us 2 options...xp home(which runs in safe mode and cant run windows installer on it) or proffesional setup where it goes through the first part then it says setup is starting windows and then it goes to the error message Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
catgate Posted September 17, 2008 Report Share Posted September 17, 2008 Well the OS is the Opererating System and so yours is XP, but I am relatively unfamiliar with it, and so can not help you a great deal further. In my depth of ignorance however, it seems odd to have home and professional on the same machine, but then what do I know. I have a slight suspicion that this may be the root of your trouble.I am sure someone will be along before long who knows more about it than I do. In fact even the forum cat known more than me. y2khardtop Posted September 17, 2008 Report Share Posted September 17, 2008 you should be able to "check disk" from within windows also, even in safe mode. Click on My Computer, "right click" on the c drive, and left click on Properties. Under tools, click Error Checking and click the fix disc option. A safe mode boot with command prompt should also work. If neither gets your drive such that Windows installer will format and install, then either buy/borrow a copy of Spinrite to repair your drive, or get a new hard drive.There is a program call HDTune that is also good for disc scanning, showing SMART data and bad sectors on any drive. I doesn't fix anything like Spinrite does, but it can find and warn you of HD damage. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
y2khardtop Posted September 17, 2008 Report Share Posted September 17, 2008 hey, and if the drive isn't working anyway, try DBAN (dereks boot and nuke).....creates a bootable CD which does a complete wipe of your drive. Then use the Windows CD to format and install.....The SMART system on all modern hard drives is supposed to remap bad sectors, so unless the drive is physically damaged, then the formating should be able to work around any bad sectors.
