verdegris
Hello,I'm using XP Professional.Today the Automatic Update function somehow became disabled, and I can't re-enable it by any of the means described in the Security Center or in the help files. Are there any other ways in which this can be done? Thanks

ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
System Restore should restore all system files and settings to the selected restore point.Did you actually run System Restore? If so, and it did indeed not reactivate Automatic Updates, then your system may be infected with malware. What anti-malware programs do you have installed?Try an online scan from http://housecall.trendmicro.com/ - use v6.6 as it is faster and easier than the v6.5 version. It found 23 items and cleaned 22 of them. However, it did not identify the 23rd item which is presumably still lurking somewhere in my computer.I've tried to run the Trend Micro HouseCall scan, but no matter what selected I got the same error message telling me that no files or folders were selected. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Don't give up so easily; try the Ewido scanner at http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/ (using Internet Explorer).
