In fact, they can do much damage. On the other hand I have never seen any benefits from running registry cleaners.But if you want to run any registry cleaner anyway, I strongly recommend to take a full registry backup before you do so. ERUNT is a very good and proven tool to do so.From what I have seen around, the registry cleaning portion of CCleaner seems to be pretty safe. It scanned the registry and my entire C: drive, found some 2,000 "problems", then offered to "fix" them for a registration fee of $37!No, thank you - my system runs perfectly fine and doesn't need any "fixing"... Run a scan with any registry cleaner and it will most times find just a few hundred "damaged" entries. Fixing these will not make any significant difference to the speed of the computer and there is a chance the registry cleaner may not do a good job and reduce the computer to a very expensive paperweight.Windows XP is particularly forgiving of orphaned registry entries and runs just fine with them in place. Unless a registry entry has been left by malware, in which case it is better to specifically target removal of that entry rather than run a blanket clean up, I would recommend not touching the registry and not using registry cleaning programs.Should you decide to go ahead and use a reg cleaner, ERUNT should be installed and run before using the reg cleaner.
