Hi there,

I want to set up a file server so that I could have access to my files from my laptop over the internet if I am not in the office. Any ideas?

I think I should use something called a VPN (still have to figure out what it is).

Also what about file synchronization? is there a way the windows server can keep an updated version of my files so that I dont have many version of the same word document?

I am not sure what you call the applications/services I would need for all of this.

Hi Bobster, Many ways of doing this!

First things, what set up do you currently have (i.e. computors at what location with which operating systems)? One option which i am currently setting up is a server with a domain.

VPN will let you connect to your network from outside of the office, i am just starting it myself, i think i am right in saying you would need a fixed ip address to use this, if you want to sync files from your office pc to your laptop then windows server is the best option.

thanks for the reply. Well, I have the windows server, then 2 pc's on the local network and then a laptop that I want to be able to connect to the server over the internet when I am not on the local network and get files from the files server.

Do I have to setup a domain for this? If I setup a vpn connection to the server then it would be on the local network even though its over the internet and cant I then just connect normally the the share on the server?

Also how would file synchronization work? aspecially between the laptop and the files shared on the server. I cant find out how to achieve this?

As for the static IP address, I setup a ddns account.

Hi, Yes you can set up a domain and join the pcs to the domain, then have the laptop joined to a new group in active directory that syncs files when joined to the domain again either on the local network or through a VPN. You can have drive mapped in the local machines and laptop to any folder/drive in your DFS.

I am just in the process of setting this up myself at home so maybe we can work together if we stuck.
