Toshiba Satellite reboots and BSOD's:-(

I've had four reboots since I've tried to post this.....:| Here's a copy and paste of the notes....

System: Toshiba Satellite M70 CL1, 60 Gb hard drive, 1.5 Gb RAM, Intel Celery (M) processor 1.6 Ghz,

ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M series onboard video driver

OS: XP Home (SP3)

Purchased in 2005 and is out of warranty:-(

Issue: Random reboots and BSOD's.

My hunch: Video or chipset drivers or a combination of both.

Vendors contacted: Toshiba - NO help:-( Intel, it can't identify chipset?!?!?!

Problem description: Laptop randomly reboots or blue screens

Detailed information: Client had originally had another 'professional' look at this laptop. He deemed it

'unfixable'. I was later handed this laptop by my wife (they are co-workers). I took

a look at things and felt it was either the video card, chipset or RAM (or a combination

of these) that may be the issue. I've checked the RAM (even pulled it and examined for

'foreign' materials via eye and microscope. Nothing there. The BSOD's are not consistent

in the error codes, but the majority of them indicate video (of course).

I've inserted the restore CD (today) and now it is as it was when it was new, other than

obvious updates from Microsoft, and a NIC update. It still just blue screens or reboots.

I've attempted to get video driver updates for the onboard video driver, but I have to pay

30 bucks to get this??????? Okay I'm Scottish, but if there is an issue, shouldn't this

be a free upgrade....? Progress.... Yah right, gouge the consumer...

So, I try to find out the chipset driver on this laptop. Go to the Intel site and use

their utility to identify the chipset (so I can get the proper drivers), and it says it

it can't identify the chipset!!!!!

The system does do a memory dump, but I have not downloaded the symbols (yet) to analyze

things.

Anyway, my questions are:

1) Is this a boat anchor?

2) If the answer to the above question is no, then how do I identify the chipset?

3) Am I running off in the wrong direction?

Any help/suggestions/slaps to the head/kicks to the nards appreciated.

Let me know if you need any other system information, hardware/software installed, etc.

Oh, I did install AVG 8.0 just for poohs and giggles:-) Like a virus/trojan/spyware is gonna stop things....:|

There are two versions of the Intel® Chipset Identification Utility (v3.22).

For older chipsets you may have to try this version (v2.91).

Checking for latest drivers in General (XP, 2003, Vista) http://www.drivermax.com/

P.S. if the correct drivers don't solve the problem, what error code do you see on the BSOD, and what module name (if any)?

I did use the older version of the chipset utility, because this is an 'older' laptop (it's only 3!!!!).

Anyway, I forgot to add to the original details, that the BSOD's, the error codes are NOT consistent, you will get different messages each time it blue screens....

IRQ_LESS_THAN.....

sometimes there is no error code, just a blue screen.

The last one that I grabbed said:

A driver corrupted pool memory for holding pages destined to hard disk.

The last error code I grabbed was:

0x0000007F

0x00000008, 0x8004200, 0x00000000, 0x00000000

I know that I wrote down some of the other error codes, but can't find them right now:|
