wmatthies
I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows Vista Business with SP1 installed. As far as I know the automatic Windows Update has never worked. I get notices that there are updates but that's it, not what they are nor any instructions about how to get them. When I go in through the Control Panel and click on the Windows Update icon the control panel update window will open but nothing happens after. Just the spinning wheel. No matter how long I wait the only way to stop that is to control/alt/delete and force the process to stop.Suggestions?By the way I had other unrelated issues and was forced to do a system rebuild but the update problem remains.I should have added that I currently use Zone Alarm but had Norton previously and the problem occurs with both. Also turning off protection does not fix the problem.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Welcome to the Windows Forum.Go to http://www.update.microsoft.com/ then click on 'Review your Update History. You should see a list of successful and failed Windows updates. Click on the icon of a failed update to see the error number. What is it? wmatthies
Welcome to the Windows Forum.Go to http://www.update.microsoft.com/ then click on 'Review your Update History. You should see a list of successful and failed Windows updates. Click on the icon of a failed update to see the error number. What is it?Thanks for the suggestion but unfortunately it didn't work. When I clicked on the link it opened which in turn attempted to open Windows Update on my computer resulting in the program locking up. Reading posts in a number of forums relating to this I see I am not alone. Windows Update in at least Vista (people using other versions of Windows also have problems with it but of a different kind) appears to be a dark star for many and the worst part is that the only way to update is to use the auto procedure. However when I try that it hangs up and the only way out is control/alt/delete force quit.I feel a new Mac coming on.
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb
Did you try this on Internet Explorer? "Locking up" - Microsoft Update takes a while to get ready; did you wait a few minutes?Anyway, you can get the error codes from file C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log - can you post it (or the last few hundred lines) here? I have successfully used Windows Update on my wife's XP laptop and in Windows on a desktop Mac but no luck on my laptop. The following is the code from today which includes an attempt to use Windows Update with the same hang up result.
