Files on CD -RW not readable

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I used Nero Startsmart to write to an Imation CD -RW, but it seems like only the "skeletons" of the written files are readable; when I open the cd for reading, windows explorer shows the files. One is an executable with a windows GUI, but opening it from the CD opens a command prompt window for about 3 seconds then closes it. One file is a text file, that opens but is blank (there is text in the file and I have ran the executable from the hard drive)

I have a video on a laptop that is going bad. I want to copy Nero Burner ROM from my desktop onto a CD then copy Nero from the CD onto the hard drive of the laptop so I can burn the video (I have tested this version of Nero on the same type of video (VOB, BUP, and VIDEO_TS files), burning it to a DVD -RW and it plays fine from the DVD, so I know Nero will burn this type of video to DVDs I have.

I'm have trouble copying the Nero program to CD. I have tried twice. Is there a CD preparation step I'm missing (I don't think so since Nero doesn't complain about burning to the Cd.

Can I just burn Nero to a DVD and copy it to the laptop from DVD (I know DVD is different from CD, but is it possible?

thank you.

I have good news and bad news for you. First the bad: you can't copy/burn programs that are already installed on a computer if you don't have the original installation files (and you probably don't.) Commercial programmers do this purposely to deter piracy, but it makes everything harder for us legitimate folk. Part of the problem comes from the fact that lots of commercial apps rely on registry entries, which don't copy well (read: at all) to alternate media.

Now the good news: there are freely available burning programs that do exactly what Nero does. InfraRecorder comes to mind. Try that instead of bulky, buggy Nero.

Yep, I am concerned that the extraction of Nero takes more time than I have before the laptop shuts down. I'll try Infrarecorder. BTW, the video is my Grandmother's funeral, so it's not piracy, but yep, files are often set up to deter copying. Thanks.
