Win2000 Pro and iPod

I bought this iPod Nano 8Gb package thinking I could simply drag-n-drop files onto it from Windows explorer....biy, was I wrong.

I've tried several Third-party programs which claim to work with my OSs: WinME, 2000Pro and 98SE. However, none truly do.

I've come to the point of getting certain progs to see my iPod drive, in all OSs. I've even seen the iPod synchronizing when I put .mp3 and .wav files into prog. Still, the iPod says there are no songs despite diminishing capacity. I can even see the files (though renamed to random numbers) in various hidden folders on the iPod. Explorer recognizes the files and will play them through USB into laptop using WinAMP and a plug-in I grabbed. However, the iPod says there is no music on it and it will not play independently.

I've brought all this to the attention of "experts" at Apple. I read that Win2000 needs SP4 in order to run iTunes. OK. I have dial-up and the file is large.....

Well, I bit the proverbial bullet and dedicated my PC to an all-night DL. The file came across perfectly however, and this is really frustrating, I get this message when trying to install SP4:

"The file d:\winnt\system32\drivers\atapi.sys is open or in use by another application. Close all other applications and then click Retry."

What does it mean? Should I attempt another clean install maybe from a different drive?

My laptop has a partition for ME and 2000Pro. This is the unit I wish to use for transferring my music. It does NOT go online so any other services offered by iTunes is moot. I simply want to fill my iPod with my music.

I cannot help you with the iPod, but I'll try to help with the SP4 install.

The first thing I would try is just to reboot Windows 2000, then make sure that no application is running. Close everything in the systray, and disable your anti-virus and other anti-malware programs.

If this still fails, boot into Safe Mode, and try the SP4 install from there.

I tried your advice- Safe Mode and load- and I got the same result.

I understand that you aren't willing to assist with the iPod. It's ok.

I simply need 2000 updated.

I did a Google search for the term file \winnt\system32\drivers\atapi.sys is open or in use by another application and there are lots of hits concerning Windows 2000 SP4; go and have a look too.

In many cases it was related to something called Alcohol; uninstalling it solved the problem.

In other cases a file unlocker helped to go aheard with the SP4 install, e.g. http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/

It may also be worth to check if you have the latest Windows Installer for Windows 2000 (3.1); you can download it from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details...38-de776fd4138c (valid for Windows 2000 SP3 and higher).

P.S. I cannot help you with the iPod because simply I don't know it; other forum members may be able to help with that.

A continuing problem you will have is that the operating systems you are trying to use all pre-date the iPod device and, typical of both Mr Jobs and Mr Gates is that they do not often make provision for backwards compatibility of their products.

and it says that my Nano is compatible with Win2000SP4, yet iTunes 8 is only compatible with XP or later and iTunes 7.3.2 is NOT compatible with my Nano.

YEEEECH.

I've tried several third-party progs:

Anapod, vpod, EphPod, MediaWidget, Axara, and iTunes 7.3.2

All "see" the unit, none will correctly synchronize despite Explorer and iPod recognizing filespace being used.

There HAS to be a prog that will do what iTunes8 does for my Nano, yes?!?
