Fast with Vista, Slow with XP

I have an HP m9040n desktop. All the specs for it are here. It came with Windows Vista Home Premium, and I'm fairly happy with that, but I've been experimenting with dual-booting it with other operating systems, mainly Ubuntu and XP. Both Ubuntu and Vista run like a charm on this system, but whenever I boot in XP, my system is extremely sluggish, as if it doesn't have enough ram or something. I'm thinking this might be a driver issue, but I'm really not sure where to start. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Windows Forum.

  • what service pack level do you have on XP? SP3 has proven to be noticeably faster than previous levels.
  • what's the size of your page file?
  • have you ever defragmented yor XP partition?
  • check Device Manager for any yellow exclamation marks.
  • check the Task Manager (Processes tab); are there any high CPU usage processes?
  • check your startup programs; are there any unneeded startup items? (use Startup Inspector to check your startup list.)
