Does Windows have to be installed on a primary partition?

Hi

Just wondering if Windows has to have a primary partition.

As I have 9 operating systems to install, on 9 partitions, and if the windows ones need to be primary, then I'll have to have 5 primary partitions [solaris, OpenSolaris and Mac all need Primary partitions]. Which would leave no room for an extended to contain my logical partitions.

If anyone knows for sure if Windows Vista 64-bit and Windows 7 64-bit need primary partitions, please tell me.

In the past, Windows always needed to be on a primary partition in order to be bootable.

Depending on the boot manager you use, this may no longer be a requirement. You are in the best position to try it out...

Thanks, hopefully someone else who is knowledgeable about this will reply before I have to test it out myself

If I am able to install the Windows installations on logical partitions, then my problem will be solved.

Let's hope this works (and if anyone knows if it will or won't, please tell me!)

Hehehehe... thanks for asking.

Well at the time of writing I didn't know if I would be install Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 or the new Home Server one (2009).

So yeah... :lol:

Well I guess the only thing left that will help me decide which version do install, is if Server 2003 needs a primary. If it doesn't, then I will install it, if it does, then I will install Server 2008.
