Internet doesn't work on Windows 98SE

My connection scheme goes like this :

DSL Modem ( DHCP )-> Router -> Windows 98SE Box
|
Laptop ( Windows Vista )

Router is a Linksys WRT54GL 1.1 with DD-WRT 24SP1 firmware using DHCP. The laptop has no difficulties to connect to the internet, but that is not the same for the 98SE Box ( Chaintech 7VJL1 with Via Rhine II network adapter VT8235 ). The settings in TCP/IP properties are :

IP Address -> Obtain an IP address automatically
WINS Configuration -> Use DHCP for WINS Resolution
Gateway -> None
DNS Configuration -> Enable DNS, Host: home, Other options are blank
Bindings -> Client For Microsoft Networks, Microsoft Family Logon
Advanced -> Allow Binding To ATM is set to "No"
NetBIOS -> Greyed and checked "I want to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP"

I also followed some registry tweaks

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\DHCP entries

IPAutoConfigurationEnabled is set to "01 00 00 00"
ReleaseLeaseOnShutdown "0x00000001"

The winipcfg utility says -> Node Type -> Broadcast, NetBIOS Resolution Uses DNS -> Checked IP Address 0.0.0.0, Subnet Mask 0.0.0.0, DHCP Server 255.255.255.255

Your router gets its outside IP Address via DHCP from the DSL Modem or your ISP, but it should also give out DHCP addresses to computers connected to it (see modified diagram). Please make sure that's configured and working. You'll have to log onto your router to check that DHCP is enabled for the inside network.

Can you try connecting the laptop to the Router using a cable and testing with the radio temporarily disabled?
