I have folder full of several files that begin with

this ex

1073 - filename

but when /I seek to a search for a specific order a.b.c etc doesn't work right

When I seek to a search or arrange by name it sorts by numbers only and skips the filename alpabetical listing

My parameter is set as

* DIY

or ???? - DIY

after the number still lists scrambled and not according to letter or phrase typed in

I have several files with DIY I want deleted but they are scattered all thru the folder

How can I tell to sort the folder by that particular order as nothing works right at all

Welcome to the Windows Forum.

But sorry, I cannot understand what your problem is - can you supply a screen shot?

What happens when you click on the 'Name' title bar?

when you tell windows to list it by name all it list is by number sequence only

1071 - Dyi file 1

1072 - buzz file 6

1073 - Cache google file 3

1078 - Youtube video 1

1080 - DYI file 8

1082 - Youtube file 3

1085 - buzz file 2

1088 - Cache google file 1

only assigned like this under arrange icons by name

or using the search parameter * dyi* or ???????buzz*

the listing is still only listed ny numerical sequence only and not by number and letter sequence

when after a search it shouldl ook like this ignoring numerical seq and listing it by first by first letter it finds

1085 - buzz file 2

1072 - buzz file 6

1088 - Cache google file 1

1073 - Cacch google file 3

1071 - Dyi file 1

1080 - DYI file 8

1078 - Youtube video 1

1082 - Youtube file 3

normal search options and parameters don't list it in that order

and thats the order I nedd to list into those groupimgd so they can be easily deleted or moved ot any other action and there are welll over 60 of each rhat need s to be worked on.Only is just lokk each specific one and use Cntl anc click on each onr individually then

I don't really understand your problem, but do you have 4?

I used four example files

and the order they should be displayed in after doing a proper search expression

the sample suggests 4 but each one contains 60 + items

the program generated the filenames assigned numbers because they also delegate repeat file names

in the text that I need to delete but each one has has over 60+ pf them and would be easier to del if them if they were all gropuped together than randomly thrown into the native listing

in addition to using the wildcharactres " *and ?" also typed the first few letters in and still did not display anything

used in the expesssion as DIY* should have brought up alll names that started with those letters but came up with nothing

As I understand it, in standard computer sorting some symbols come first, starting from the left, then numbers, then letters (small, capitals), more symbols, etc according to ASCII (see THIS WIKI ITEM). You could try re-ordering the input so that your letters come first, but I think you'll still find you have problems because the Name command in Windows is very basic.

You could try creating a filing system in Excell, which gives you a little more control over sorting.

I think you'll need to write a special script (or get someone to write it for you) to do what you want to do. Unfortunately I don't have the ability to do that.

I'm sure someone, somewhere, must have had this problem before and solved it. You could try browsing some of the Office user groups, like THIS ONE. Or try various phrases in a search engine.

yeah weell the wildcard character and the first letter and the wild card should habe woeked It woeked before so why isn't it working bow

the wildaard characters are rhe "*" or the *?" fo;sew acording to the number characters before the first letter

in the sample it would be 4 for the number 1 represent a space 1 for the hypen and one for the space then the 1st letter your seeking follewed by the "*" so that 1108 - would ve rep this way "??????D*" minus the quotes

and norrmally windows find results and displays them nut on my XP it doesn't

don't need a third party application to sort it that way its built in feature od Windows
