Hello

I'm new to group policies, and would like to learn how to create one (for my home-setup) that will replace Notepad with Notepad2.

To do it manually I would first delete (or append a .bak extension) to the following locations of Notepad;

  1. %WINDIR%\servicepackfiles\i386
  2. %WINDIR% \system32\dllcache
  3. %WINDIR% \system32
  4. %WINDIR%

Or on Vista;

  1. %WINDIR% \servicepackfiles\i386
  2. %WINDIR% \system32\dllcache
  3. %WINDIR% \system32
  4. %WINDIR%\SysWOW64 - (NOTE: Probably only on Vista x64)
  5. %WINDIR%\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-notepad_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_cb3928ff285d2ca9 - (NOTE: Probably only on Vista x64)
  6. %WINDIR%\winsxs\amd64_microsoft-windows-notepadwin_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_9ee86862b36a7eff - (NOTE: Probably only on Vista x64)
  7. %WINDIR%\winsxs\x86_microsoft-windows-notepad_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6001.18000_none_6f1a8d7b6fffbb73
  8. %WINDIR%

So here's what I'd do manually.

Rename Notepad2.exe to notepad.exe. Make changes... notepad.ini will be created. Next I'd copy both notepad.exe and notepad.ini to all the locations listed above. This would of course require high priviliges on Vista.

Can someone please tell me how I would go about creating a Group Policy that will replace Notepad with Notepad2?

Thanks in advance,

Panarchy

PS: I am using this as a learning experience, on my home setup. I have never created Group Policies before.
