Is it possible to make a set of rules for folders?

Hello.

I have a folder where I store original photos and scanned images. Let's give this folder the name"originals". From time to time I might add new files to this "originals" folder, but If I need to edit or modify an image from this folder in any way, I would then save a copy to a different folder - named "work" folder - and leave the file in "originals" untouched. Rarely I'll want to delete a file from "originals".

So my question is this...

Is there a way to create a set of rules for for folders in Windows - in this case for my "original folders" - so that nobody (including myself) might accidently change OR delete OR move a file from my "originals" folder?

The set of rules would be this:

1. modify file - NO

2. cut file - NO

3. copy file - YES

4. replace file - NO

5. delete file - YES, but ask to verify

6. add new file - YES

7. open file (and save as... to a different folder) - YES

I back up my files regularly on a seperate drive, but if I accidently delete or change a file without knowing... the backup will sync to the mistake made and data will be lost from there as well.

Anyone have an idea?

Welcome to the Windows Forum.

If your disk/partition is formatted as NTFS, then you have some of these options you can set. Right-click on your folder, select Properties, tab Security. There you can allow or deny 'Full Control', 'Modify', 'Read & Execute', 'List Folder Contents', 'Read', and 'Write'. That's all that Windows gives you to control.

There may be other software that allows you more control, but I don't know of any off-hand. Search Google for access-control software.

Thanks for the reply Pat. My disks are all formatted as NTFS. I'll check the options in the Security tab to see if they might do the job I'm looking for.

For others reading this thread I might add: at first I couldn't find the Security tab mentioned - only General / Sharing / Customize tabs were available.

A bit of googling and I found this:

To display the Security tab -

Open Folder Options in Control Panel. (Click Start, click Control Panel, click Appearance and Themes, and then click Folder Options.)

On the View tab, under Advanced settings, clear the Use simple file sharing [Recommended] check box.
