Alt + # no longer working with IE8

I can't make the Alt+ numbers appear anymore. The only one of the lower, single digits, that will show is Alt+7 for the mid dot. They don't work on my Gateway laptop keypad or the wireless regular keyboard. I haven't used them for many moons but they were fine the last time. I did download IE8 a few days ago and like it alright and I suspect that it's the culprit.

Searched all over google to see if it's maybe a common thing but can't find any other complaints. In fact I can't find much stuff on IE8 at all. Anyone heard of this problem? or maybe I'm chasing the wrong rabbit?

edit: I just get the little blank square so I know it's trying.

I don't know of any keyboard shortcuts Alt+#; what are they supposed to produce, and do you have a table with what the expected output would be?

I just tried Alt+0, Alt+1, Alt+2, Alt+3, Alt+4, Alt+5, Alt+6, Alt+7, Alt+8, Alt+9, and nothing happens.

As I understand it official IE8 shortcuts are the same as for IE7. The list is available here: IE7/IE8 SHORTCUTS.

Alt + # must be a shortcut within a specific program and using a specific keyboard (real or virtual). Shortcuts (even Microsoft's built in ones) can be amended from within a word processor such as Word. Open your word processor, right click on the toolbar, select Customize > Commands > Keyboard. You can then check, & change if you wish, all the standard shortcuts using the Customize Keyboard menu. Be careful using this however as you may make changes that have unforeseen consequences.

I made a page at http://thurmania.com/Altchart.html last year to show a chart of using these codes. You just hold the ALT key and type the number on the numeric keypad and the sign appears. I've been using them for years.

All of a sudden the first numbers don't work. I suspect they are proprietary for MS, you can check the chart. All the others, ALT+32 (nbsp) and above, work fine. So I thought someone may have heard that MS has depracated them or something. I'm very surprised that everyone doesn't know the Alt + #s. They go along with the s and the Literals.

The only low nrs seem to be 7 (middot), 20 (paragraph) and 21 (section sign). Just open notepad or something and hold the alt and use the numeric keypad and check them out. Above 32, which is the nbsp and will just move the cursor, they seem to all work fine. The rest should give a blank box if you're affected too. Thanks though for the answers.
