winfor666 Posted July 10, 2009 Report Share Posted July 10, 2009 I installed Windows 2000, but now I can't boot to Windows XP. The two systems are on different partitions so they don't share any common files except boot.ini which I understand should be at the root of C. Unfortunately, search finds boot.ini in a backup folder but not at the root of C. When I chose to boot to Win XP, the message says "Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMd" It seems a bit strange because I didn't choose Windows 2000 to start and because the startup directory for Windows 2000 is WINNT. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted July 10, 2009 Report Share Posted July 10, 2009 Windows install does strange things if you don't install different Windows version in this order: older version, newer version.So I do not know what has actually happened.On what partition is your XP installed?On what partition is your 2K installed?Do you actually get a boot menu when you start the computer?
