Upgrade to Windows 7

I am looking for some assistance please. I have just acquired a 3 year old PC that has a copy of Vista Ultimate loaded but I have been told this is not a legitimate copy and I want to get rid of it and load Windows 7 Home. First question, can I upgrade even though the versions are different? If not then can I reformat the hard drive and simply pop in the Windows 7 Home disk and do a clean install? If I have to reformat do I do a format in explorer and if so when do I put in the Windows 7 disk to install the new OS. Any help would greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the Windows forum.

Not many of us have Windows 7 experience yet, especially with upgrades from previous Windows versions.

In your case, where you suspect that your copy of Vista may not be legitimate, I would suggest that you start with a complete new installation.

Check your boot sequence, so that the CD/DVD player is first in sequence.

Insert the Windows 7 install disk, then boot your computer. You should be given the option to format your current partition (or create a new partition). Format you current partition, then proceed with the install.

Make sure that you have a full backup of your current system, in case that the Win 7 installation fails. This will also allow you to restore any data from your current system that you may want to keep or restore to your new system.

Feel free to come back with additional questions.

thank you so much :) you seemed to be very helpful with the above member so perhaps you could help me too. I read what you told the member to do, but since i do not have the installation disk, because i bought it through online and as a download file i am wondering what i can do to do a custom clean install with no traces of vista left. to me i want it to be as if my computer came with 7 on it already. get what i mean? i just want a clean slate. thanks in advance!
