setting permissions for directories and whole drives

Hello Forum,

I would like to give one of my external HDDs read only status when used with a session other than administrator (eg. user).

The reason is that I use this external HDD to accumulate and store multimedia content. When I use this HDD to load some of this content to media players, I use the copy/paste function, but clearly If I were to use cut/paste by error I would effectively lose the file for good (I delete the files from the media players when no longer needed). If I could use this HDD in read only mode, this would eliminate the risk of accidentally removing contents.

Any suggestions as to how I could do this (and in general set and control file, directory and volume privileges in general)?

Hi there, and Welcome.

I would be looking at your problem from an entirely different angle.

Firstly I would require a "Hard Backup" of my media files. Storage space is very cheap at the moment, no point in doing half a job where important files are concerned.

Secondly, I would have the originals auto synchronized to the backup.

Any files accidentally deleted from the original source would then be replaced automatically from the backup by means of synchronization.

Software called : **Second Copy** will do this job for you. ($29.95 USD)

Will this work for you ? - Yes.

How do I know ? - Because I use it in a similar situation.

You will also have a very versatile backup mechanism for many other things also. :D

Download the trial and experiment a bit with it. I dont think you will be dissappointed, and you will have a system much more reliable than what you suggest.

Also, hold on to hear any other views on the subject also.

A very original idea. Above all sounds like a very secure solution. I will certainly look into the software you recommend.
