weekendsrule32
I had an old dell with a 300 watt power supply. I had been running Linux (fedora) with a 9400gt graphics card installed running two monitors fine. However, when i installed windows, the graphics card would not work. The fan would go, but i could not get a video signal. I would then reinstall the card that came with the system, and it would work. The only thing i can think of is that maybe windows takes up more processor power than Linux, therefore not leaving enough power over to fully power the card from the 300 watts. Also, is it possible the card is fried?

I think these days 300w is not really enough. I believe linux is lighter on current demand. As to the card if it runs on linux it may be OK. It is a personal decision at the end of the day.

Just temporary. Thanks for the help.

I think the make of the PSU is important, you may see cheaper ones with more watts but i would not trust it to hold that voltage very long and it wouldn't be stable...Rule #1 dont skimp on PSU. durrenmatt
i have a 600W power supply with a 3 ghz dual core and a 9800GT card from nvidia and at least once a day my pc just shuts down out of the blue when it's doing some demanding task....i'd say at least 700w are required for more powerful machines
