Move Japanese language pack

Hey

I have a pc with Windows XP SP3, and need the Japanese language pack on it. Problem is, I never got a windows install cd with it, only a backup cd to restore the pc image. This makes it kinda hard to install the language pack on it.

Now, I also have a Windows XP SP2 installed on a virtual machine. This one does have the Japanese language pack, and I was wondering if I could somehow move the required files from it to my SP3 install. Is this possible? And what files would I have to move from where to where?

I also have the install cd for that Windows XP SP2, if that helps. It didn't allow me to directly install the language pack on SP3 though.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the Windows Forum.

Not sure what you mean by "Japanese Lanugage Pack". If you mean the Japanese fonts and IME, this is part of Windows XP, and you don't need the install disk to install them. (Open Control Panel | Regional Options, then select Japanese as an additional language.)

If you mean something else (MUI?), please clarify.

I'm not sure how else to call it, but you usually install it by opening "Regional and Language Options" in the Control Panel, going to the tab "Languages" and checking "Install files for East Asian languages". That's when it asks for the cd.

That's the one I mean, and need to install the Japanese applications that I need.

Hi Tovam,

I know what you mean. It does ask for a Windows Cd. But notice that it is looking for specific files. You can find those files in your /windows directory in the install that does have East Asian support. It might take a very long time cause it needs about 50 or so files, most of them will be in the directories: /system32 , /fonts and /ime , but I have done that before, it works.

Yes, I'm pretty sure that's what I'm looking for. So it would work if I move every file from the one install to the exact same folder on the other install?

I'm going to try that. Thanks.

EDIT: I tried it, and I can now check the box "Install files for East Asian languages" and all, no problem, but I still can't set my language to Japanese on the advanced tab.

"Setup was unable to install the chosen locale. Please contact your system Administrator." So still no luck.

but I still can't set my language to Japanese on the advanced tab.

I don't understand what you mean , the advance tab doesn't set the default language, it sets the non unicode (see attachment).post-4283-126353395195_thumb.jpg

Did you manage to add Japanese input ? Are you trying to change the interface language? In that case you will need to install MUI.

If you are just trying to change the non-unicode to Japanese so you can install Japanese language programmes, try copying over the intl.inf (\windows\inf\intl.inf) from the other install .

My bad, I indeed want to set the language of non-unicode programs, not the language of the system itself.

I copied the I386 folder from my working install to the non-working install and changed the register to look in that folder for everything. Next, I copied the intl.inf file from one to the other, like you suggested.

Now 'Install files for East Asian languages' in the language tab is checked, and I selected Japanese as the language for non-Unicode programs in the advanced tab. It doesn't give an error on either, but my Japanese characters still show as gibberish.

Also, I can't add Japanese as an input language. I don't care about this, but I guess that means the Japanese isn't really installed after all?

I know you probably can't solve something like this with this little information, but do you know a way to find out what else could be wrong? Thanks.

After much searching, I found a torrent called 'TinyXP East Asian Language Support', with instructions and all needed files to add the language support to WinXP (not just TinyXP). It all works now.

I don't think I'm allowed to give the link (I guess even mentioning torrents of Windows stuff is pushing my luck), but Google it if anyone ever has the same problem.

Thanks for the help, Seshomaru Samma and ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb.
