.net framework 3.5 problems

Recommended Posts

Basically, lately i've started getting errors which involve .net framework to running properly. The two programs it doesnt work with are WD SmartWare (a program used for managing my Western Digital hard drive) and Curse Client which is used to manage my World Of Warcraft addons. I have no idea how this happened but i've tried reinstalling but it doesnt work, it just tells me i need to turn windows features off or something, but ive turned them on and tried it and turned them off and tried it and it still doesnt work :S

Here's an error report Curse Client gave me..

Hi there, and Welcome.

I didn't really come to any conclusion on the error report, so I started looking in other areas for you.

Starting with Western Digital first: Taken from WD Community Forum.

.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.=.

WD Smartware

So I just bought a 1,5 Tb My Book Essential Hard Drive and I am getting that problem in which the Smartware gets an unexpected error and exits... I have read what to do in the WD site and updated everything... Yet the problem still remains... Any help?

Re: WD Smartware

Although I am a bit unsure about where you are at with the install and what you have tried thus far, you might want to go back to square one. Prior to any software updates or hardware install I always create a restore point of my system in a good working state to avoid going down a path and not knowing how to get back.

1. Uninstall any versions of Smartware from your system and reboot after disconnecting the device.

2. Manually go to http://update.microsoft.com and double-check that you have all high-priority AND optional updates installed; more specifically the .NET framework.

3. First uninstall from your add/remove programs adobe flash player. Check for latest versions of adobe flash player here: http://adobe.com

4. Reconnect the device and Update the Firmware(if applicable) and then software here:

5. Try running the Smartware backup.

Re: WD Smartware

It worked!! Thanks a lot!!

Hope that is some help to you.

Hi there, thanks for the response but i dont think its to do with the programs, but .net framework itself. I think i have a corrupted installation but i cant reinstall it or uninstall it at all, it just keeps giving errors.

Sorry to say that, - "I Dont think it's to do with the programs" - doesn't quite cut it with diagnosis, and still shows up as a bit of a doubt, even in your own mind.

It is either a yes it is, or no it isnt scenario. No leeway for lateral thinking, and it must be proved.

Did you follow any of the advice given by WD Smartware that I posted ?

Have you thought of "System Restore" ?

Do you have an older registry backup in place ?

Have you an Image of your operating system before the problems started ?

Do you think a clean install of your operating system is a viable solution ?

How do you see the way forward to cure the problem in the situation in which you find yourself ?

Okay, i know its .net framework. I cant uninstall it, i cant reinstall it, i cant fix it.

I have tried WD's advice, no i dont really want to restore cause i cant really pinpoint when this problem began and i dont wanna lose files, no i dont have a registry backup, image? no not really? a clean install? no thanks, considering i cant manage any files i'd need to back up... How do i see the way forward? Fixing this problem and preventing it.

Okay. Understandably you are getting a bit angry with the situation. That's good. Anger can be motivational.

First of all. Returning to a previous point in time with "System Restore" will cause you no loss of files, and is reversible. (You can Re-set it back to where you are now, and you wont lose diddly squat)

Try "System Restore" back to the furthest date you can find and see if the problem is still there.

Now start moving forward to earlier dates and see if you can pin-point where things are going wrong.

I was trying to find out if you had a registry backup program. You dont. - So end of story there.

(Try to get yourself fixed up with ERUNT when things are back to normal for you. It's small, it's free, and it is a good safety net.)

You dont have a Disk image. Fair enough. Not everyone does. However, now could be a good time to make one before you go any further.

Lots of people cannot afford really excellent Disk Imaging software like "Acronis True Image". This is understood. "Macrium" is a free Disk Imaging utility. You can find it ***Here***

Make a "Disk Image" of your operating system as it is now. Also burn yourself a Macrium recovery CD.

Once the disk image is made, there is no danger of you losing any of your pre-installed programs or data.

You can beat the heck out of you operating system, install and uninstall things safe in the knowledge that you have a disk image to fall back onto.

i cant manage any files i'd need to back up

Macrium Disk Image will manage that for you.

Disk Imaging with Macrium is going to take you a bit of time to get your head around, but no more so than the "World of Warcraft" and at the end of the learning curve you will have some tools and knowledge which will carry you far beyond "Gaming", and can even extend the time you can spend "Gaming" without problems in the future.

How do i see the way forward? Fixing this problem and preventing it.

The fixes based on the information you have given are all there. If you cannot pin down the fault or make a decent diagnosis of the problem, you have got to start searching for them across the internet. It's all out there somewhere. Some of these faults are so User / Computer specific due to different types of software installed that they cannot be designated as "Stock Faults". There is no way that you can do the usual quick "Spoonfeeding Fix" That people come to expect. Far too many variables.

If this thing has got itself into a loop of Dot Net Errors with install/ uninstall, face the fact that something may have gone corrupt and you may not be able to kick the operating system into touch, - Ever !

Suspicious to me that Western Digital, and Curse Client find themselves in a position where they are having to explain their software in relation to Dot Net.

Preventing it ? Careful installations in conjuction with registry backups (Auto daily comes with ERUNT) and regular Disk Imaging. That is going to be your preventitive course in the future........... Only if you are good at taking advice. ;)

I've been doing some more digging around and came up with this:

If you want to completely remove .NET Framework 3.5 from off your Vista RTM OS, you need to do the following:

1. Uninstall .NET Framework 3.5

2. Uninstall the following KBs by using Installed Updates.

- KB929300 (.NET Framework 3.0 Cumulative Update 1)

- KB110806 (.NET Framework 2.0 Cumulative Update 1)

After doing this successfully, you will have removed the 3.0 Updates required by 3.5.

I know That your operating system is Windows 7, but it could come down to uninstalling your MS Updates to the .NET Framework to cure your problem too. It's worth a try.

I found it on an old Microsoft forum.

When i try to uninstall/install it tells me i need to turn windows features on/off, i've tried with them on and off but no luck. I'll restore later and see if that helps.
