Can't access 3rd HD

Hi again,

I have a new build and one of my hard drives is a SCSI. For a few days, it has not been showing in Windows and it is also not being detected by the BIOS when I boot. Now, however, Windows is showing a third drive (Local Disk (Q:)), with a capacity of 0 bytes. I have no other devices plugged in to any ports so this must either be an error or it must be my SCSI drive.

I clicked "check for errors" under properties but it says Windows can't access the drive.

What is it? Why can't Windows access it? And why is it 0 bytes?

Thanks for your support,

George.

Hi again,

I have a new build and one of my hard drives is a SCSI.

Do you mean a real SCSI drive with SCSI controller ....... or do you mean it is SATA ?

If it is SCSI is it -

a] Traditional (Parallel) SCSI

b] Serial attached SCSI

c] USB Attached SCSI

Hi,

Yes it is a parallel SCSI with a PCI SCSI controller.

Also, I wanted to add that while screwing in my USB ports I accidently touched the board with one of them and heard a little "zap", then a burning smell after. Obviously that's bad, but I'm thinking it may have something to do with the problem. My sound card is also not being detected by Windows and I think it's because of this reason. For the next two or three boot ups after that I was getting a second boot screen showing up asking me which hard drive I want to boot from. That screen is not coming up anymore and I don't know why. However, there is still an unexplained third drive showing.

Thanks for your help.

George.

*edit* it has come to my attention that installing Office 2010 bete will cause a drive Q to appear. Any idea on the SCSI thing? thanks.

A few possible solutions/problems :(

Re. your BIOS statement - do you mean the PC BIOS ? Does the SCSI controller BIOS show as loading OK initially when you boot ?

Presumably you've checked the ribbon cable is still fixed at both the card and drive ends ?

Is the controller card fitted properly in the PCI slot ?

Can you try the card in another PCI slot ?

"while screwing in my USB ports" - do you mean you were fitting a PCI USB card while the PC was live ? If so - it doesn't sound good !

Hi again,

No, I was not screwing in a USB card. I was screwing on a couple of USB backplates (the ones that plug in to the motherboard) and the computer was turned off but PSU was on. I usually take care of earthing myself but I was in a hurry and forgot. Anyway, I have solved the issue with the motherboard not finding my SCSI controller and sound card: they were not plugged in correctly!

The case I am using is cheap and I had screwed in the PCI devices to the case thinking all was well, without realising the other end of each device was sticking out half way! So I am having to keep them plugged in without being secured to the case.

The BIOS is now detecting the SCSI drive and I can also select it as a boot device. Windows also came up with a message saying it had found my SCSI device but it has no drivers for it! Grrrr, so I still cannot use it. The device manager shows them with "!" marks over them, and I can't seem to find a driver.

Thanks Boris for your replies.

George.
