Daniel Fagnan Posted February 12, 2010 Report Share Posted February 12, 2010 Hi I have a 4 year old pc : hp pavilion. it has 1.5GB of ram, pentium 4 cpu, a ati upgraded video card with 256MB of on board memory,a 200GB hard drive.and windows xp home editionI had this problem a couple months ago so i plugged the hard drive in my brothers pc and backed up the files then re-installed xp.It does the same thing now but I can't read the files.Problem: Windows xp loads like normal but when it finishes the loading bar or the splash screen it restarts the computer.I know it's not something with overheating or cpu because I can run linux off a cd, so it can't be overheating.I can access the bios, but when I try do go into safe mode etc.. does the same thing.I'm not sure what the problem is. I'm pretty sure the hard drive was later bought and it's connected with SATA so it must be no more than 2 years old.It might be the hard drive, I don't know. Dencandy Posted February 12, 2010 Report Share Posted February 12, 2010 So it doesn't happen every time the computer starts, but only sometimes, is that correct?There can be many causes of this problem, so you need to try to get more information. Next time it happens try to get the computer started normally. When you succeed in that open Control Panel then Performance & Maintenance > Event Viewer, then select Applications and look for items with either a red cross or a yellow triangle next to them. Right click on the item and see what information you get there. You might even get a link to a Microsoft website for more info. Scroll down 2 or 3 screens only to see what's there.When you've done this with Applications repeat the same for System.Post back what you find out.
