Windows XP desktop backgrounds

The problem is not life shaking and I'm sure is a simple fix. A few days ago I inadvertantly moved about 14 personal photos from "My Pictures" I believe by clicking on them and then previewing them before selecting one to use as a background for the desktop. It now appears that the only way to remove them from the list of backgrounds is to empty that particular folder in My Pictures. I did move them to a flash drive, noticed they were now absent from the list, and when I reloaded them back into the folder they reappeared on the list. They do not show up in the Wallpaper set of pictures that came with the tower. Saw a note on another site that said you should copy them to a separate folder and work from that, but I never had to do that before. Once a year I put all pictures on a DVD for archiving and clear everything from "My Pictures". I know that will solve the problem but I'm thinking there is another way. Would be grateful for a logical explanation. John
