CD Burning

I use an older version of Nero to burn (v. 6) and when I burn to CD or DVD, all the created files on the disc show up in Windows Explorer with the Internet Explorer logo, rather than the JPG or TIFF logo. When I show thumbnail view, the logo appears quite large in front of the image. Very inconvenient. I've installed a couple of other freeware trials of other burning software and the same happens. Gives me the impression it's not the burning software, but something in the settings of XP that have been corrupted or altered in some way. Also, I don't appear to be able to burn within Windows Explorer any longer. Can anyone help?
