Outlook web links in email starting Adobe installer

I have a Dell computer with XP Professional installed on it. While using Outlook to read mail messages, I noticed that if I click on any web link in the message that an adobe reader download manager activates and tries to upgrade my version of adobe reader. These web links have nothing to do with adobe- such as a link to "unsubscribe" from the email that I am getting. I have allowed it to load the latest version of adobe- but when I hit the link again (after the latest adobe install) it tries to download it again.

I have tried removing the adobe download manager program and tried loading the latest version of adobe myself (9.3.1)- it still tries to download an upgrade to adobe. It looks like Adobe is using a 3rd party upgrade program from Nosso, their link is nosltd.com. That is the program that keeps activating and I do not see it in the remove programs choices. I also looked in the registry and see that there are still entries for Adobe v7 as well as v9 (7 was the prior version). I don't understand the registry- have done some simple fixes in the past- wondering why v7 is still there when v9 is loaded.

I have looked on the adobe site for similar issues but have not found it so far.

Can you find that Adobe download manager in Add/Remove Programs, and if so, uninstall it?

Thanks for the response.

Yes, I found the installer and deleted it but the install starts again the next time I click on any web link in email. I checked again, no installer in the installed programs. BTW- it is not the normal Adobe installer but some 3rd party installer as noted in my first post.

You deleted it, or you uninstalled it?

Thanks again for responding. I "uninstalled" Adobe Download Manager. From some other forums I have also posted this issue on, I was advised to uninstall Acrobat.com since it has an add-on for Outlook. If my friend is ok with that, I will be trying that suggestion in the next day or so. I don't think they use any other features but acrobat reader. But- I would appreciate any other thoughts you may have on this issue. Thanks.

Adobe AIR and Adobe.com came bundled with Adobe Reader 9.1; you can uninstall both safely if you don't use them.

Rearding the download manager - if you have uninstalled it, then it is a mystery to me how it can still be running when doing certain actions. There must be some association in the registry doing this.

Having just re-read your original post, I suggest that you do the following

P.S. do you have any other Adobe products installed, e.g. Flash Player, Shockwave Player, etc? If so, any of these also may have caused the Nosso DLM to be left behind.

First- I wanted to thank you again for your suggestions. I did try what you suggested but the issue continues. I have been posting on another forum and have tried a number of things with no success. I will paste a summary here for you- or you could go to the web link to observe all the notes- it is at

Things I have tried so far:

1- I uninstalled Adobe.com, restarted computer- still issue

2- I uninstalled ALL of the Adobe programs, restarted computer- still issue.

3- I deleted the Adobe files in the program folder, emptied the trash, restarted the computer- still an issue.

4- I went in the registry and saw there were entries for both Adobe 7 and 9. I saved a backup of the Adobe 7 entries, deleted that from the registry, rebooted computer- still has the issue. Looking at my notes, I did not delete the Adobe 9 entries but expect to see the same result.

5- I looked more closely at Outlook. It is 2002 (10.3513,3501) SP-1. The program key has "OEM" in it- so I am guessing this program came with the computer. My friend has no idea where the program disks are (it is a Dell computer). I suggested he try installing a newer version of Outlook but that is not an option at this time.

6- The last thing I did before leaving was reinstall Adobe Acrobat Reader 9- did not want to leave him without a pdf reader. End result was Adobe Reader 9.3.1

Also tried:

7- I deleted history and temp files in outlook (assume that is what you meant by cache).

8- I deleted all the temp files (using run %temp%) that I could. Only the files for that day remained.

9- I opened Adobe reader preferences and unselected the "check for updates when opened" option. I did not see any other options to check.

10- I tried the shortcut creation suggestion (created shortcut on desktop with a web link as the target). It worked the way I thought it would and went to the correct web link.

11- I also went into "file types" and looked for any that might go to the adobe downloader program- did not see any.

I appreciate any suggestions you may have. If you do not mind, please explain what the suggestion is intended to do. For example, for #1- I did this to remove an application that had an add-in in Outlook. I did #2 to remove any trace of Adobe to see if that would stop the issue. Thanks again.

I agree that this annoying update is almost certainly caused by some third party program that has hooked into Outlook. Adobe does have the annoying habit of installing automatic update checkers every time one updates, but normally that is easily stopped with a utility like StartUp Inspector or Autoruns.

You could try using Microsoft's own Process Explorer to find out what programs are running when this annoyance occurs: MS SYSINTERNALS. You'll need to read up on how to use it.

Alternatively, try another message manager (such as Windows Live) and do away with Outlook (which I believe is no longer recommended by Microsoft).
