CD/DVD drive disappeared from "My Computer"

Recommended Posts

First off, I am running Windows Vista Home Premium with SP2.

What has happened is that both of my CD/DVD drives do not show up any longer in My Computer or in the Device Manager - it is as if they are completely gone. One of them still opens and closes and spins up if you put a DVD in it, but the other, older one is completely unresponsive. I have two virtual DVD drives that I created using MagicISO, and these still show up and are accessible. I have already opened the machine and verified that all the cables are attached properly, so I am wondering if this might be a hardware failure... though I can't figure out what would cause both to fail at the same time. Any suggestions would be appreciated - I've already done the regedit step that suggests removing UpperFilters and LowerFilters, and this did not resolve the problem.

Thanks!

Double check that the cables (IDE or SATA) haven't come adrift.

If they are IDE drives it is likely that they are both on the same cable so, check at the motherboard end as well as the drive end - particularly if they are in a Master/Slave configuration.
