In search of advice for automating provisioning

Hi all. I'm searching for recommendations and hints for doing "automated" provisioning of windows systems.

The core of the task is to come up with a way of driving windows installation tools (or any other tool which seems apropriate) from a script/config which is externally generated. So for instance, if I have a tool which can generate a list of software packages to install, I might start a windows installation CD image in a VM, feed its config to it, and let it churn for a while, to produce a machine image.

There are other possible implementation strategies too, the core functionality required is to generate a machine image based on an externally generated manifest.

I've been looking at things like the SMS package and ccmsetup, it looks like there's some bits of technology there which may be promising. Anybody out there have other suggestions? Thanks in advance...
