I attached is a screen shot of my laptops current hard drive configuration, but it would only except files under 200k so it is REALLY bad. I wrote in words what my drive looks like at the bottom of the post. If you know how to post a better picture, please let me know and I'll do so ASAP. The partitions are the same as when I bought it new, with exception for the Unallocated 3rd Partition/space (87.89GB). I know have this as a result of "shrinking" my C drive in preparation for installing Ubuntu on my system.

Questions:

1. What are the first (1.46GB) and forth (last) (8.93GB) partitions on my hard drive there for? I only know about the C drive, but never knew about there other two.

2. Can I use or remove them?

Your screenshot is not very clear, but it seems that the first partition is some kind of recovery partition - although it seems to be perfectly empty. The second partition is empty as well, so I don't think there is any use for both of these partitions.

I'm not sure why the 1st partition is labeled 'Active' - do you use a boot manager?

Be very wary in deleting any of these "empty" partitions, especially with Windows 7.

Look in your Toshiba user manual (should be a copy on your hard drive) - it is very likely that the larger 8.93GB one is a recovery partition

Ubuntu has partitioned you HDD so that it can have a root partition for "/", and a swap partition which is the 1.GB partition.
