Windows Installer & Corel Photo Album 6

I operate with Windows XP Home.

For years I have certain programs running like Norton and Outlook Express, and Corel Photo Album 6, and all have functioned perfectly.

I am set up to receive Windows Updates automatically, and this happens by the PC staying on and then turning itself off.

Recently following a Windows Update My present problem started, well I think it was due to the Windows Update, but I cannot be sure.

Now at first Turn-on I get the Message, from Windows Installer, “Preparing to install”,

and then from Corel Photo Album 6, “Wait while Windows configures Corel Photo Album 6”.

I then have to load the Corel Disc, so now I leave it in the D Drive permanently, but I believe that the Corel program is definitely in the PC and running because previously I could manage my pictures with Corel with the disc not loaded at start up.

In a previous attempt to sort this out I obtained a program called zapps.exe and ran it but it did not clear the fault (may be I did not use the zapps.exe program correctly).

I hardly need to add that I am not ”computer literate”, and this slow start-up is a real nuisance to me, so I am most hopeful of help from a sympathetic enthusiast. “Forums” are new to me as I do only a minimum of Web Accessing, but the introduction to this Forum suited me very much, the requirement for Members to be genuine and considerate and polite etc

I suggest the first thing you do is to go to http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/ and run their housecall malware procedure. However, before you do so, disable Norton (you might like to discard it and get something more effective).

After you have runn "housecall" you should know better if it is something nasty that has crept in or if it is an installed software malfunction.

The Fault Returned.

I applied the remedy by loading and running Housecall, and then shutting down completely and restarting. The fault was cleared but next day it had returned… At first turn on the start up routine was much extended with operator inputs, and references to “maintenance“ before “Installation”. Now it has returned to the steady condition as first reported here.

My first (very amateur) thought was that the Windows automatic update had introduced this fault. Could I delete my Windows, or just the most recent Update, and then allow an Auto update again?

I apologize for my unfamiliarity with the Forum, I was looking for a space marked “Reply Here”. but I accidentally pasted in the “catgate” contribution. I have prepared these comments in a Scratch “Word” area and now I will try to paste it to the Forum.
