John Sheppard
I have a Toshiba laptop running windows 7 home premier. I have a Dell desktop running Windows XP service pack 3. I would like to connect to the desktop from my laptop using "Remote Desktop connection" via the internet. both machines are on a broadband connection. The documentation with windows 7 leads me to believe that it is possible, but I can't get it to work. My questions are. Can it be done? if yes! Can anyone help me do it? I would really like some assistance please.

It's free.Download from here

AlanHo
Trying to restore my desktop any help acepted with thnksThis thread is about remote desktop connections. If you have a problem with your desktop not related to remote control of a computer with another - you should really start a new thread giving more details about your computer, its operating system and the exact problem
Syndrose
Its hard to give you step by step instructions because you will need to enable port forwarding on your router.First thing you have to do is enable remote desktop on your XP machine. I don't have XP installed any more so these steps are not exact.Right click my computer and select propertiesClick on the Remote tab and check the box that says allow remote connections to this computerclick ok.Log onto the router that your XP machine is on.You will have to forward port 3389 to the IP address of the XP machine. You will have to have a dynamic DNS (free from dyndns.org) either setup on your router(its a feature in some new routers) or on your XP machine.Once you have that all setup, you can start the remote desktop software on you W7 machine and type in the dynamic DNS name you got from dyndns.orgI do this to access my home PC from everywhere, works great.
