New DVD-Burner causes BSOD

I just bought a new DVD-burner to replace the old IDE unit I was temporarily using in my new computer. After installing it, BIOS detects it just fine and the computer proceeded to boot Windows (Win 7 Ultimate). The boot process comes as far as the windows logo (it sits there for a little while), and then goes into a BSOD followed by a computer reboot. After rebooting, windows wants to try and fix the problem (i.e. it performs a system restore, which does not solve the problem, and then tries other methods of fixing it, which do not work either). I eventually admitted defeat and proceeded to disconnecting the Unit completely, however windows is still unable to boot!

I'm sure this is an issue with Windows, since if the Unit was not properly connected I'm sure BIOS would not be able to detect it (and its name) and probably proceed to take a dump and scream at me. So, what I am wondering is, does anyone know how I could possibly fix this issue without reinstalling the entire system? Tomorrow I am going to borrow a Win7 disk from a friend (Windows came pre-installed on the computer) to try and run a system repair from there, however I would still like some input from people with more Windows experience than I have.

The key seems that even after disconnecting the DVD your unit still fails on startup. It may well be that when you went into the BIOS some setting may have been changed. I would suggest you carefully review ALL your BIOS setting and keep the DVD disconnected till you get the unit booting properly. WILFJ

If this is a desktop machine, also check all the connections inside. It is very easy to inadvertently dislodge cables in a computer case.

As this is a new machine, return it to the supplier for checking.

I would suggest you carefully review ALL your BIOS setting and keep the DVD disconnected till you get the unit booting properly. WILFJ

The thing is though, since the HDD was the first boot device even before I installed the DBD-burner, I never even went in to BIOS Setup before trying to boot Windows, so its not an issue with BIOS settings. Anyway, I seem to have solved it... I reconnected the drive and tried to troubleshoot it again (I also ran a chkdsk and a memcheck to make sure it wasnt the HDD or RAM), after which I rebooted and as usual the computer got a BSOD and rebooted, only this time I noticed that just before it crashed the light on my Webcam flashed. Figuring I had nothing to loose, I disconnected the webcam and let the computer reboot, and now it works again! Not sure what could cause this though... I had some prior issues with it (i.e. windows would not recognize it), but those where resolved when I uninstalled the shipped driver and upgraded to the latest version from the provider. This has gone off topic a bit, but any idea how a webcam could cause this?

Btw, the BSOD error message was: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

I assume the DVD is working now? Sorry, really no answer on the Web cam other then some conflict with the system/program. I suspect trial and error to locate. Does the DVD work when the Web cam is disconnected ? Can you provide just what is the status of each firmware under each connection. I'm sure you will locate the conflict after a few tests. Wilfj
