crom Posted December 20, 2010 Report Share Posted December 20, 2010 I have about 20 computers at a time that I need to copy a 30mb file to. When I initiate the copy on all the machines--or run an installation over the network-- I get really poor performance, in fact I get failures and excessive delays. Wireless is a joke. The files are being copied from another Windows share on a 2003 server to Windows XP Pro clients. Am I asking too much from this system? Should I use FTP instead? Any insight is welcome, thanks. Yes, all clients are trying to copy the file to their machine at once (gigabit ethernet). What info about the server drives are you looking for? I'm not sure of the configuration but I can find out. No error messages, it just fails miserably. I tried the restart on fail switch for the copy command but it just prolongs and extends the whole mess. I know we should be using SMS - SCCM - WSUS or something more appropriate--we're working on it. I just though I should get better performance from a file server. Chris Posted December 23, 2010 Report Share Posted December 23, 2010 If you're running: copy Then it should show any errors. But you will need to put a pause on the end so it doesn't vanish. Although I assume you have have done this?When the copying takes place is it when the computer is booting (i.e. when the desktop is loading) or are you doing it when Windows is up and running?When it fails on a client goto Start, Run, Enter the server host name, click OK and see if you can see it's shares.
