Harves Posted January 30, 2011 Report Share Posted January 30, 2011 I have tried my 1st back up on Windows 7 after transferring all my files from my previous computer with Vista. Message tells me the back up was not completed because the volume for a file has been externally altered so that the opened file is no longer valid. Drop down window tells me try to run back up again or change back up settings. How do I do this and how do I find the externally altered file ?? bludgard Posted January 30, 2011 Report Share Posted January 30, 2011 Hello,Harves.Are you migrating these files from Vista to Windows 7?If this is the case,do you necessarily need to back them up?Would it be easier to copy and paste from one machine to the other via some media with read/write capabilities?CD/DVD,flash drive,USB memory card,external hard drive,etc.I don't have a lot of experience with creating backups other than full images or snapshots that I can recover from if anything untoward were to happen to my operating system.I do copy and move a lot of libraries/folders/files by way of all the methods I mentioned and a couple more.If I missed the point completely,forgive me.I do this sometimes.Welcome. Harves Posted January 30, 2011 Author Report Share Posted January 30, 2011 Hello bludgard,Thank you for your interest and prompt reply.I am very new to computers and had never backed up any files from my original machine which had Vista installed.When i purchased this new machine with a better C P U and more RAM it came with a belkin cable which I thought would be an easier and faster way to transfer all of my files. BIG MISTAKE !! bludgard Posted January 31, 2011 Report Share Posted January 31, 2011 The Belkin cable would be a faster and more comprehesive transfer method.I've never tried it so would have to research the method whereby the transfer is executed.It would save a few pence not having to use a lot of plastic discs or whatnot I suppose.Possibly more reliable?Anyway,I'm glad you found an easier more imediate fix to this problem.If you havent yet,check out the Windows 7 program that creates a full system image backup of your computer that can reliably get your machine back up and running if everything decides to turn south on you down the road.;) Windows 7 System Imaging.
