shokan Posted February 7, 2011 Report Share Posted February 7, 2011 In XP SP3, stereo sound stopped, only mono now. I reinstalled the card driver CMI 8738 over the old one. When I slide the right/left control in the volume control for the card, I get the Windows error sound. I get full volume mono sound if I leave the slider all the way to the left. I get much louder full mono sound if I slide it all the way to the right. If I put the slider in the middle where it should be I get barely any sound at all and it is a degraded version. It's a tinny signal from one stereo channel only. Like I say, any time I move the slider, I get the default Windows error sound, the "chunk" sound when you push a wrong button. The error sound becomes much fainter if I have the slider in the middle, just as with all the other sounds/music.If it is the driver that is a problem, I need advice on how to uninstall before reinstalling.Device Manager syas the card is working properly, but could it be the card anyway and is there a utility to test the stereo signal?Thanks. The new driver interface has a 2ch test which speaks in the right and left channel in turn. But, they come out in mono; that is, I hear both test audios coming from exactly in the middle. Music plays with the vocals being very faint and the whole thing is in mono. As before, as a stopgap solution, I can get all the channels' sound (or, at least, get back vocals in music) by sliding the balance all the way to the left output.BTW, the C-Media driver download page (your link above) is currently non-functional and other download sites result in a 404 Page Not Found when trying to download. I did finally find it. The driver is CMI8738 v8.17.34 and the download file name is PCI-8738-0900401-8.17.34(XP3264_LO-01).zip. Don't know what else to try. bludgard Posted February 11, 2011 Report Share Posted February 11, 2011 I tried the link and it works for me.I do not know what the problem is.Are you rebooting the machine after uninstalling?And again after reinstalling?Have you tried this in safe mode?I really do not know what to suggest unless you have created some kind of backup or image of your HD.You could try reinstalling your OS.I know this sounds extreme,but there you have it.It could be the card.A clean install will confirm or deny this.
