SSD Installed on Computer with a 750gb already installed

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone I hope it has been a nice day for all! I now have my SSD drive installed as C drive. I wasn't able to get it as C drive until I read the sata plug has to be plugged into the number one sata slot on the motherboard. Now when I boot up the boot up manager lets me choose which drive I want to boot, the original 750gb drive that I partitioned when I first got the computer or the SSD drive. Whichever one I boot up comes up as C drive. The SSD is faster than lightning, however, I'm unable to launch any applications on the original drive which is D and E while I'm using the SSD. While using the SSD I browsed into the Program Files (86) on D drive and sent a launch able file to the desktop as a shortcut. I thought maybe I could use shortcuts sent from D and E drive to the desktop on the SSD. The shortcut looked fine, meaning it had the appropriate icon and such as that. When I tried to launch using the shortcut I got an error. The error just had a couple of parenthesis with nothing else there. No error number or anything that would give me a clue where to go with this. I loaded my virus software on the SSD drive and it works fine but I can't load much more because the drive is only 40gb and is almost as full as I want it. I need room for caching, etc. Does anyone have any ideas how to get an SSD drive to properly load and function on a computer that already has a hard drive? My equipment is as follows:

HP Phenom II 9850 quad core

8 gb of ram

750 gb Western Digital hard drive

Windows 7 sp 1

Take care and thank you, Rob

Hi Rob, and a big welcome back.

Now when I boot up the boot up manager

Which boot manager ? - How do you boot up a boot manager ? (I think we may need a bit more information here Rob.)

when I first got the computer or the SSD drive

Which did you purchase first ? - It's a kinda of a, - "Either", "Or" - statement Rob. (Chicken or the egg. :) )

Did you design the computer around the SSD. Or the SSD around the computer, if you see what I'm saying here ?

Whichever one I boot up comes up as C drive

In which way do you see a solution to that problem Rob ?

I can't load much more because the drive is only 40gb and is almost as full as I want it

Yep. - That is one of the main problems with SSD's at the moment. What sort of research did you do before going the SSD route ?

I can see that you need answers here Rob, so just for a while I will present again your post that may make it a little bit easier to understand for folks.

John.

I'll just stick Rob's problems out here in blocks (Paragraphs - Posh :P )

To see if anyone else can help him.

Whilst we are awaiting the answers to come pouring back in Rob, it would be useful if you could answer my questions in the thread first.

This is going to give posters a good idea, - "Where you are coming from" - Purely as a guideline.

SSD's have been around now for well over twenty years, but have only come into prominence recently perhaps with "Gamers" who require it to be "Even quicker, - and even faster".

And of course those who like to "Talk" SSD", generally to show to others that they are "On Top Of Their Game" and show off a bit, as far as cutting edge technologies are concerned.

You can find out the full "Educational" facts about SSD's (Solid State Hard Drives)

Here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solid-state_drive

And for an up-to-date look at SSD's - ** HERE **

Just waiting on an update from you now Rob. :flowers:

John.

It could be a good day ! - Maybe we have learnt something about SSD's, -

- or even how to construct a post into paragraphs. - It's all down to the flip of a coin, or some other such human intervention. :)

That makes sense. When the SSD is removed, your HD becomes C and D and the Registry shows those programs as installed on C and D. When you insert the SSD, you shift all the drive letters and now you are using a new registry, one that does not know of those programs. You need to reinstall your programs with the SSD in position. Of course, then you will have problems again when you remove the SSD. In many cases, the reinstall will go quickly as the install routine will find the previous installation and simply update the configuration files and the new Registry.

If me - not a fan of dual-boot setups, I would start over. Keep the SSD as C and keep the HD, but reformat D and get rid of that Windows. Then reinstall your applications. It really makes no sense to me to have to mess with a dual boot system for the next 3 or 4 years - especially when the operating systems are the same.

And there you have it Rob.

A fully detailed reply to that which we have given to your original post would be appreciated back. (And at twice the speed.  )

Dont keep us hangin' around here Rob. We have readers willing to kill for your replies. (Within the next 15 minutes will do jus'fine buddy, - No rush.)

John. :flowers:

I attempted to post information to catch up with you folks. However, when I hit the button for spell check it prompted me with some sort of "would you like to add" yada da yada. I clicked it and my post was gone and I can't find it anywhere. Maneman I meant to say when I use my boot manager to boot up. MY BAD! Digerati I believe you hit it right on the nose. The registry on the SSD wouldn't contain the necessary entries for my method to work. I could go into the registry and physically enter the necessary info. DUH! Like I should even mess with the registry! Not in this lifetime.

I think I'll start by going to the links Maneman posted and perhaps learn some more about the SSD.

I kindly thank each and every one of you for the posts, take care and I'll be back when I either finish reading what the links have to offer or when I get tired of reading them, take care Rob.
