Folders-permission

Hi everyone - first time in this forum. Can anyone please explain exactly how to set permissions for folders in Win 7! Today I created a folder, placed contents in it and saved it to an external hard drive. When I tried to get it back, I placed it on my desktop wasn't allowed access to it! I am getting really confused with Administrator/user/public etc. Basically, I want "one for all" - I do not want a seprate administrator's account (found this inconvenient before) and my hubby and I just wanted to be able to use ALL the pc without hindrance and setting permissions etc. How do I get ALL the folders to carry the same "everyone" permission please? It's driving me mad! All the folders - libraries/public etc are just a nightmare so far as I'm concerned!!! Thanks to anyone who may try and point me in the right direction. Presh15 .

Thanks for your response. Local drive is NTFS. The external hard drive is FAT32. I copied to desk top - then sent to hard drive - and back to desktop. Hadn't considered conflict with NTFS and FAT - is this the problem? I will practice with some other stuff tomorrow -maybe it was a gremlin - as I have used another item from the hard drive today without problem. That said, I would still like advice on how to "Set" my folders to use for everyone - am I the only one who finds all these folders in Win 7 confusing!

Thanks for your help.

Presh.
