Icons Identifying File Types?

Recommended Posts

hi,

Can anyone advise if there is a folder on computers of standard icons.

I have a problem, where windows can't find or at worst, takes me to the wrong locations, due I feel to the fact that the Icon for some files are not recognised by windows.

I admit to having changed some myself, but I suspect others have been changed by downloaded programs.

One in particular, has messed up both my log and install files.

I have tried going into properties and opting to change icons, but there is only one icon to chose from, and that is the one causing the problem.

I have looked this up in help to no avail.

Can anyone help??

The problem that you describe sounds like corrupt shortcuts as opposed to wrong icons.

The icon is purely a visual representation of a program and changing the icon would have no effect on which program actually runs, that is more to do with file associations. If you could go into a little more detail i.e. what are you trying to run and what actually runs it may be a little easier to help.....

Thanks for reply,

Have win98se and have a program called DiskData which is a great tool as it analyses in graphical detail the contents of everything on your computer.

However it's icon or shortcut has latched on to all of my "Install" and "Log" files, with result that windows refuses to recognise the programs these are a part of.

I have used Tweakui to try to rectify the problem by returning all file identifiers to their original settings, and have tried selecting each of the errant files, gone into properties, selected change icon, but find that only one icon shows up, and this is the Diskdata one.

Any ideas are welcome!!

sorry to be a pain....

What actually happens when you open a Log file or an install file?

I am downloading Diskdata as we speak to see if i can replicate your problem...

Hi Backwards,

Sorry for delay in replying.

You ask.

@What actually happens when you open a Log file or an install file?@

Well I am taken to DiskData and not to the program file I'm looking for!!

I have contacted DiskData who reply that they have never had a complaint of this nature and suggest that my register must be corrupted!

Saying.

"It's not something we've ever heard of, but it sounds like your PCs registry is corrupted in some way. This is not due to DISKdata, but simply a coincidence that the corruption ended up using DISKdata's icon. It could of easily happened to corrupt with any other icon.

That said, we are not specialist's at solving registry corruption problems, especially with Win 98se, so can provide little guidance in that area."

Any ideas welcome.

I've attached a file which lists all the Windows files that contain Icons - unfortunately only the fact that they contain icons and not which ones although it's obviously possible to make educated guesses. I do have a freeware programme called IconXtractor which allows you to see the icons contained in any file and extract and save them. Type it into Google to get their web address.

Hope this is some help.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed but I really thought I had it licked, but it is still a live issue as I find that I still have the problem with one particular icon from a program, which has latched onto every log file on my computer with result that I can't get at these files through their shortcuts but am am taken instead to this Icons program when I click on any log file.

My os is 98se.

Any ideas?????????

You need to go into Folder Options, File Types and change the Association for *.log files. If that doesn't resolve it, then it may be your shelliconcache that's become confused. Ensure your folder options are set to show all files, including hidden and system files, then search your hard disk for shelliconcache. Delete, then reboot so it can be recreated.

Thanks, I have done all that to no avail.

Have solved the problem for now, by simply uninstalling the program whose shortcut icon was causing the problem, so am the loss of this program which I paid good money for, but it's not worth the hassle.
