peterye Posted October 2, 2011 Report Share Posted October 2, 2011 Hello all: I have a 4G usb drive used to work properly. Today, when I was reading a file on it, windows popped up a window and asked me to scan&fix a problem on that drive. I clicked start but windows failed to finish scanning it (The progress window was closed in the middle of scanning). Now whenever I plug in that usb drive, windows 7 would tell my the drive is installed properly and the device functions well. However, I can only see a drive labelled as "removable disk (M:)" (it normally would have another label) but windows cannot read the drive nor scan it. I can see it under device management so I tried to remove and reinstall the driver but it is still not functioning. I wonder if anyone knows what's the problem and how to fix it? Wiping the drive and reformatting may help, but I see you want to recover the data contained thereon.There are numerous and many programs avilabe to perform such actions, both free and paid for. Search through these free programs and experiment with a couple. TestDisk, Recuva, and EaseUS are a few trusted progs, but find one you are comfortable with. Basically, save it to the hard drive on your computer and then save it to your flash drive. This will allow you to have a backup system in place should failure occur.Perhaps you have deleted files that you need and was hoping to find a way to recover data; there are several commercial products that you can use to do this. A simple Google search will pull up many results that will provide you with a list of products that should help. Not all data can be recovered, but assuming that the drive device is not broken this should provide a good option.If your flash drive is broken, say the male part has snapped off from the device or even if the drive was stepped on there is a good chance the data can be recovered. Again, a simple Google search will provide a list of companies that can assist with recover of data, often for as little as $50 with just a day or two turn around.If the device has severely damaged it may be much more difficult to do data recovery. However, a professional will best be able to provide you with the best options. bmarker103011 Posted November 9, 2011 Report Share Posted November 9, 2011 I am pretty sure that a flash drive will take about a couple 100,000 cycles of read/writing. it basically depends. if a large file is being written, then that would still count as one cycle. it is just like the ipod touch flash memory drive. after about 5-8 years, you have to get it replaced by apple.
