Hi all, sorry if the post is not in the right place! my OS is Windows 7 home premium 64bit

i started the laptop today and entered my password. i came back to see an empty desktop screen and an icon popup from the windows explorer bar saying something like i have been logged on as a temporary profile and that i should restart to recover.

i restarted the laptop and all my programs seem to be working and i havn't lost any data but most of the programs shortcuts on the desktop are gone missing somewhere. i have googled this but dont really understand what i should do!

is there a risk of just continuing on as normal or should i restore to a previous time before this occured?

i dont really know what i should do! or if it's safe to work away or what. as of now though i dont have must confidence in the laptop and im not saving any work on it.

What should i do? any ideas! thanks

Hi Pops thanks for the reply. sorry about the delay in my repsonse. wel i have a backup from when i first got the laptop. in the meantime i have been running anti-v scans alot to check for anything. i did find 1 thing once it was some power-up-regv2 or something like that. noting has happened since that day and the lappy seems fine. like i said in the first post i didnt lose any data and all my programs are still working fine. what to do now is the thing? just leave it and constantly keep my files backed up!or what

thanks for the reply again.

You should always have an up to date backup of your system - not just the files but the whole lot.

Preferably the backup should be made to a device OTHER than the main drive of your computer - in case the main drive goes base over apex. This means something like an external hard drive or a writable DVD/CD.

There is a backup program included within Windows and a number of commercial ones.
