Trying to figure out what program is running...

I'm not sure if this is the correct forum for this post, but it seemed the most appropriate. Hopefully someone here can help me or guide me to the right place.

For the past couple of months I will be at my computer and a DOS box or two will pop up and then go away in a flash. Afterwards, the mouse pointer will show a "busy" icon (pointer with the animated circle to the side) and then stop. I've been trying to keep track of these occurrences, and have come to determine that it's not associated with any primary program I have running (no idea if it's associated with a service or task). Of course, my concern is that it could be something malicious.

I do have antivirus software installed (eSET) and it updates its database daily. Thus-far it hasn't caught anything. I don't browse any sites nor download anything suspicious (don't do torrents, etc.), although I do play some games with MODs.

Is there some way to find out "what just happened"/"what just ran" via some log file in windows? That way next time this occurs I could see if it's left a fingerprint on exactly what is going on.

You say you have eSET installed but you don't mention if you run regular scans with it.

You might try running a scan with http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/ as well.

How many times does this happen in a day? After it happens (while the computer still shows the busy indication), can you open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Del), Processes tab, and see what's running?
