Partition 98se & Xp

As some of you may know I have a new Hard Drive on the way.

My kids have been moaning that XP doesn't support some of their favourite old games (M25 Racer and Nascar 2 spring to mind).Plus I borrowed my mates webcam and it isn't supported under XP.

Bearing that in mind I've decided to partition the new drive and have 5GB Win 98SE & 55GB for XP(pro).

I've never done this and have searched Google and asked mates etc but everyone seems to have a different way of doing it.

Does anyone know of an online guide that explains the definitive way of doing this,step-by-step in plain english and preferably without the use of third party software?(or would one of you kind people like to explain it to me?)

As I understand it,the best way is to install 98SE first,then boot up the XP CDRom and create a partition using that then install XP to the partition....would that give me an option on boot-up as to which partition to boot from or is that where a partition manager such as Partition Magic comes into play?

Please go easy on me.....I'm a partition virgin!!!

With the games Shirl, install onto XP then go to Desktop and right click on the game icon. Go to Properties and then Compatibility mode, choose the mode they used to work under. Works with most games.

Not into Web cams so not sure about that.

I've got an 80g hd

I used Partition Magic, not sure from your post weather you have this or not

I found it very easy to use, you can try it for free http://www.powerquest.com/downloads/eval-soho.cfm

I'm partitioned as follows;

Drive C 17g XP

Drive G 39g Video editing

Drive H 6g Downloads (games/demos etc)

Drive F 13g Games

Not much help to you really, but i thought i would just put my two Pennerth in.

partitioning using windows software alone

first to create the 2 partitions on your hard drive you'll need to use FDISK. this is available when you create a start up floppy . if you'e using windows 9x/me you can go to control panel>add/remove progs/start up tab to create one or you can download one from Boot Disk

once you've created the disk , boot from the disk and when you get the prompt A:\ type fdisk

then you can follow the steps described in this article to partition your disk click here

once you've partitioned the disk into 2, format the 1st (primary) one using fat32 and install windows 98 and set it all up properly. next boot into 98 and pop in your xp cd and start the installation, choose "clean install" instead of "upgrade" once you restart the xp setup should begin and set you up. make sure you install xp to the 2nd partition when it asks you and it's better to format the partition with NTFS, you can do that during setup.

thats it you're done! next time you start up your pc you'll be presented with a boot screen with 2 choices letting you choose whether you want to boot into win 98 or win xp.

what you can do is this

boot from CD-ROM

put in XP disc, it will then ask you for earlier version(if you are upgrading)

then the XP instalation will take you through the rest and also it will ask you about the partition bit

yeah but he wants to install windows 98 too which is why the prodedure is a bit long winded

Thanks guys....Ravin seems to have pretty much given me what I was after.The new drive should be here tomorrow so I must remember to print that out.

I spent about 20 mins this afternoon writing a response to Cookies post but it somehow disappeared and I was so miffed I couldn't bear to start again.Here is the abridged version

Compatibility:tried every option,didn't work.

Webcam:Manufacturer WILL NOT support it with XP.

I pretty much then went on to say,that as I understood it,I had to install 98 first then use XP to create a partition and install XP on said partition.It seems I was wrong but if all goes to plan Ravin has answered my question perfectly,and in plain english too,thank god :D

I'll let you know the score when the drive arrives and I get stuck :P

Hi,

I may be too late but this is what I would do.

1 Create the Win98 partition only with FDISK and install win98 onto it.

2 Boot the machine from the WinXP CD and create your new large partition from the setup options.

Converting to NTFS from a FAT32 partition doesn't do the partition tables any favours. They can get a bit large if your disk starts to fill up. You shouldn't have a problem for a while with a new disk of that kind of sizebut I'm thinking of the future (unless you fancy reinstalling of course).

well i did mention formatting using the xp cd , only create the partition alone using fdisk... anyway wonder where shirley has disappeared to ;)

Hi Ravin.

I have the new hard drive and this is what happened......

As a consequence of me getting it,my kids inherited my old one to replace their long-defunct one.I reformatted theirs first with 98SE and hated the look of it and the general layout.(I haven't used 98 for a while and compared with XP it's just awful IMHO)

I then loaded up the old,XP incompatible games onto THEIR PC to keep them happy.

I found some drivers that make the webcam work with XP too!! :D

Anyhoo,basically I formatted my new drive as XP only :rolleyes:
