How to read a kernel dump

I have an XP-64 system that keeps blue-screening.

I can't read the minidumps with dumpchk or windbg. Is this because they are 32 bit programs? If so, are there 64 bit versions available?

The Microsoft advice to roll back a software change isn't much use - how many Windows Updates should I roll back?

Sorry - I didn't give enough details.

Dumpchk says:

Loading Dump File [C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini122812-01.dmp]

Mini Kernel Dump does not contain enough information to be debugged

Could not open dump file [WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini122812-01.dmp], HRESULT 0x8000400

5

"Unspecified error"

**** DebugClient cannot open DumpFile - error 80004005

Windbg says:

Could not create process 'WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini133812-01.dmp', Win32 error 0n193

%1 is not a valid Win32 application.

Visual Studio opens a file that starts:

PAGEDU64

Where is your Windbg.exe actually located?

I find mine at C:\Program Files\Debugging Tools for Windows (x64) - so it's a 64-bit application.

Unfortunately I do not have any minidumps on my system, so I can't test it.

Can you zip up your minidump and attach it to your next post?

  • 2 weeks later...

I have dmpchk and windbg. I also have Visual Studio 2008.

If any of these can be used to analyse the dumps I would be happy to do the work myself.

Alternatively if the dump I submitted really is unreadable I would appreciate any suggestions for getting a readable one.
