Refresh or Not Refresh 8.1

Just finished completing a refresh on my laptop running 8.1. I was suspecting that my operating system may have malware installed after I clicked on a pop up window which said my flash needed up dating. After doing the silly thing of clicking on the pop up Windows said Flash was already up to date. Silly me.

So I though the refresh option would clear any malware installed.

I would not recommended this option because to action the refresh, install all updates when refreshed to Windows 8 (99 updates to download and install) and then up date to 8.1. Well 9 hours later all refreshed back to Windows 8.1 and that was with a good speedy internet connection.

The main problem seem to be with the 99 updates for Windows 8 which you must download and install before you can up date to Windows 8.1. The download windows said it was downloading the updates but after 20 minutes no updates were showing as downloaded.

I cancelled and tired again to start the downloads. Finally the downloads started to happen.

So after this effort and time I would strongly suggest a better option would be to choose a previous restore point from System Restore on your computer and try that.

I would be very interested in feed back from other members.

System Restore will not really help you in such a case. System Restore will replace any missing or corrupted system files, and will also restore the Windows registry to an earlier point. It will not remove any malware!

The only way to achieve that is restoring your system from a backup that you have made, e.g. using a tool like Acronis True Image.

Yes I agree with you. No easy fixes and as with most things in life you always learn more when you have to "put in the hard yards"
