Upgrading Windows 7 Ultimate hangs on "Windows Finalizing Settings

My windows wasn't working properly and since my DVD-drive doesn't work either, I did an upgrade of windows from an iso that I got from a friend. The process went fine until it got to "Windows Finalizing Settings". Then it seems to be stuck there. I have let it run for more than 30 minutes and nothing is happening. I also unplugged all unnecessary devices, such as usb drive, printer and my defect dvd-drive. How long does the process usually take and is there something I can do if it's stuck? I have read that installing windows can take up to 20 hours but in my case it got to the last screen in about 2 hours and I have no memory of it taking that long before.

My last resort would be to get a new dvd-drive but I would like to be able to use my computer asap.

Edit: It got past the last stage but instead of the desktop I get a blank completely black screen. I can only get into windows in safe mode.
