LG Electronics Co. (LGE) has reached another milestone in the plasma display panel (PDP) industry with its successful development of a 76-inch PDP TV, the largest in the world, company officials said Monday.

The previous record was 71 inches, which was also by LGE just three months ago.

"The world's largest PDP TV, built with LGE's own technologies, will be displayed at the Korea Electronics Show, which is scheduled to kick off Wednesday at the COEX in southern Seoul," said the electronics giant in a press release.

"The new 76-inch PDP TV, featuring 2.07 million pixels, is capable of perfectly reproducing high-definition pictures on its screen measuring 1,920 mm in width and 1,080 mm in length," the firm said. It asserted that a thickness of merely 83 mm will further add to the value of the 76-inch PDP TV.

Notably, LGE has succeeded in producing as many as three 42-inch PDPs, along with a 76-inch screen, out of a single panel. The new manufacturing technology is likely to further strengthen LGE's position as a global leader in the PDP industry.

"The successful development of a 76-inch PDP TV has once again proven LGE's unrivaled technological leadership in the PDP TV sector," said Woo Nam-kyun, president of LGE's Digital Display & Media Division.

LGE completed the second phase of its PDP output expansion scheme late last month, raising its monthly PDP output capacity to 65,000 units. In the second half of next year, LGE is planning to open its third PDP production line featuring a monthly output of 75,000 units.

LGE intends to secure more than 25 percent of the world PDP market, which is expected to grow to 6.4 million units by 2005, to become the world's No. 1 PDP supplier. "LG Electronics aims to further reinforce its position as the global leader in the PDP industry through constant R&D efforts and investments," said Woo.
